Originally posted by Steve nor was the clio, nor was the punto, both 1.2 8v engines but at least they had ~60bhp
Steven you can be a right nob jockey sometimes. back in 1993 when the Corsa was released, Vauxhall was being squeezed by Euro compliancy to reduce emissions from vehicles. they carried over a few engines from the Nova range, including the 12NZ. This had originally put out 56bhp and 65lb/ft torque, not bad from an engine that was at least 15 years old in design even in 1993. then once the engine was changed from carburettor to fuel injection, the engine lost all its charecter and eagerness. hence the abysmal performance. Vauxhall can be accused of treading the performance line far too lightly in the past as you have mentioned. with the Corsa GSi, Astra GSi etc etc. but are you forgetting the Cavalier and Calibra Turbo? they were extraordinary at the time. Now look at Vauxhall. responsible for creating a Hot version of nearly every model type with a Vauxhall name, and they are pretty bloody good drivers cars. Look at the iniatitive with the VX220 and Monaro. Yes, they are just rebadged 'lotus' and 'Holdens', but it was Vauxhall who got their name on them and sold them. As far as i am aware, the Astra VXR, Meriva VXR, VX220/VXR220, Zafira VXR are being sold like hotcakes at the moment, and they are getting superb reviews across the board. Please notice that i did not mention the Vectra VXR, although its straight line performance will destroy all but the biggest of supercars, it cant handle worth a shit  Vauxhall have changed, and i only expect them to go on to make bigger and better cars.
