i suppose the cooler going into the turbo it will be means it will have to heat it up from a cooler temp so wont get as hot.

kinda like a kettle eh? it takes not as long to heat hotter water than colder water.

maybe the above is bollocks, it sounded good to me honestly not herb induced reply

True, a turbo at say 500c will heat air up 20c if the air is there for 0.3 of a second, no matter what the starting temp for the air is....

These numbers are made up by the way LOL

its simple - cooler air going in, means cooler air out, its not as if the turbo thinks "eh' up, the air is cooler, i better heat it up more" :|

yeah id have assumed thats correct aswell. the air becomes denser after being pressurised by the turbo, then cooled by intercooler, or so i would have thought. the actual heat by the turbo will heat up the air the same in my eyes. probably wrong though

Also..... am I right in presuming 2c cooler ambient temp will not equate to 2c cooler charge temps?

But consider the fact that you will be sucking in denser (colder air) in the first place, surely that is part of the benefit of colder ambient temps?

Though I am of the opinion that it doesn't matter how cold it starts as it gets heated by the turbo then cooled by the cooler....

i understand what ytour on about, just if air passes through a red hot turbo, the best method would be to cool it more on the other side of the turbo rather than the air filter side surely?

heat soak is an issue on most turbo cars. not many seem to really do a great deal with taking/keeping heat off the air filter

it won't heat up the same in the turbo. I suggest you read up on thermodynamics

yeah, i know what your saying, but if you could get it 4 degrees or whatever less its still gonna heat up to the sme in the turbo to then be cooled down by the intercooler. the temp of the charge at the inlet it more important than that at the air filter

a sealed box of sorts with direct feed to outside with that heat wrap crap on it to shiled it from bay temps would be good. space will be the problem.

ive lost the print almost on one of my fingers from touching the turbo in my old nova. did it for a laugh, kinda blistered for about 3 weeks and is whiter than all my other fingers. oops

Your figting a loosing battle really with a turbo car. Run your engine for a while and put your hand on the turbo to see what I mean. (don't do that). As soon as the air goes into the turbo it gets heated loads because it is being compressed and just because of the sheer tempreature the turbo operates at. Though saying that Regal recomend you use an airbox on the Z20LET engines when you tune them... Not sure what the reasons are though.

yeah, but the air from the filter has to pass through the heat of the turbo anyway dont it, meaning it goes through mass meter, heats up in turbo, cools down in intercooler

surely it must make a different if you start off with colder air, thers bound to be a mass off heat coming from the turbo / manifold alone

after filter air has to go through intercooler so really is only gonna be as cold as thats cooling the charge down, so, probably wouldnt affect it much

always use open filters in the bay, surely would be better to use an enclosed carbon job as its going to bring charge temp down even more :boggle:
