Head Gasket Failure was more of a problem on mk 3 rover 200s as well as the gearboxes (my mates on his 6th box in his 216, my 214 is still all original!)
Build quality seems to vary, get a monday morning or friday afternoon car and you will spend most you time down the mg-rover dealership.
If you can get one with warranty remaining it would come in handy as hgf and box failure is very expensive.
As with all mg-rovers you have to rattle the tits off them to get anywhere! Below 4k revs they're shite, but as soon as you hit 4k they pull all the way to the limiter.
Only way you can decide for yourself is by test driving one. While your down there also test drive a 115 td model, you will be pleasently suprised.
