Originally posted by Steve Can anyone tell me the law when it comes to overtaking things like bicycles, or even very slow moving vehicles such as mopeds, or tractors on twin solid white lines?
129 Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 26 As i was told on my test for my C+E, if you come up to a bike [or other slow moving road user like a horse] you should just stay behind it until the lines are broken again, however, there are times when this wouldnt be appropriate, such as a horse rider for example on a road that the lines are solid for some distance and if you can be sure its clear ahead you could tell the examiner so and manoeuvre over the white lines and slowly/cautiously past.
