An atomiser works by soaking up the nicotine solution via a wick, around which is wrapped a wire which can withstand very high temperatures. A current is passed through the wire, making it glow red hot, which generates enough heat to evaporate the nicotine solution into a vapour which you then inhale. It's all the fun of smoking without the known carcinogens. That's not to say using an ecig isn't bad for you as well, it probably is, but it's significantly less bad for you than smoking an 'analogue' cigarette, so to speak.
