ok then. I know someone who did this to their Astra GTE, and they found that cutting the whole bottom of the airbox out was not beneficial since the engine was starved of oxygen, as there was a more complicated airbox system, and no pressure difference inside!! Drilling too many holes will also cause a problem.

p1723944, i take it you had the sense to rust protect your inner arches after removing the plastic inners?

I thought he was talking crap but you never know.

Cheers for the feedback, i'll prob attemt to put a cold air feed into the sealed box.

If not i'll butcher the air box and get meshing.

thanx again !

Cybermonkey is wrong. You can happily drive with no air filter. Its common not to use air filters for competition use....

It wont gain any advantages over an induction kit as it will have no protection from hot air. Best bet is to keep it sealed with a nice sealed feed from the front of the car.

the engine wont stall.....u can drive ur car with some thick tights covering the throttle body opening....not recomended though

By the way i will replaceing the filter panel with a K&N, if that makes any difference.

Cybermonkey24, would drilling the air box cause the same problem ?

Cybermonkey

no its not. an induction kit works by creating its own pressure within the construction of the kit so that it draws in more air immediately when the inlet manifold requires it

Cybermonkey24: it's only like an induction kit...????????

stupid idea. Pressure in the airbox will be non-existent and you will end up with the engine stalling evry time you pull away because it cannot suck any air in

p1723944: it's up to you but if you have a load of dirt entering the engine bay, your air filter will get dirty really quick and then lose performance....

Might be best to leave it sealed.

What don't cut or drill any of it ?

Mikeboy

very nice idea !

I'm not keen on having it full of holes either, but the thought of removing a section out of one of the sides and putting a fine mesh across it is very appealing

Well in that case keep it sealed then.

Thought about that but i have removed the inner plastic arches at the front so there will be a fair amount of crap flyin about.

MikeH

Or just leave it open.....

i'm going to doctor the airbox but i think the drilled look is sh!t, can any of you think of a reason why i can't cut the bottom/side of the airbox out and redo it with mesh instead of drilling ?
