if you look directly at the front of the car from the outside the thermostat is on the bottom left of the rad. basically you have wait till the car is cold then spin out the thremostat with some grips ( might be easier if you take the rad out). when you got the thermo out put the kettle on. or put a pan of water on the stove and pop in the thermo. when the water boils the thermo should pop open if not its buggered, take a trip to halfords and get one they cost about a tenner. other than that just check all the pipes if you dont see a leak, take it to a garage and they will be able to tell you if you have blown the head gasget cos i wouldnt aedvise tryin to fix it yourself.

check the thermostat, it may be leaking from there i had the same problem the thermo didnt open to start the fan so went into the red. water boils at 100'C so when its in the red its probably boiling somewhere so the pressure will increase which may force a leak out of one of the pipes. which you wont notice while the car is idling.

mine was in very difficult place under the plastic inlet manifold, one of the pipes. could be any of those pipes, check under the bonnet. and under car.

you got leak in pipes or in headgasket and if you have leak in pipes then soon you got to get a new head gasket, if you still drive and the water goes too low.

you got a leak, and when you put water in add some coolant cos it stops the water boiling thus producing gas.
