I second rubbing compound.
Use a good electric polisher or you will be at it for days by hand though.

I only discovered this on friday. Worked nicely.

You can buy autoglym clean glass, it is actually abrasive, so will take glass away when you polish it, thus removing the scratches.

60 grit sand paper will do the job a treat

my g/f has got loads of minor scratches on her windscreen wat is the best product or way to remove them or polish them out cheez carl.
