Multimeter set to volts....trying to picture a multimeter lol. 20 i think you want? One lead on + and the other on -. Start the engine and see what you got. Should be around 14/14.5 volts. Turn everything on like lights, heater, radio etc to make sure the voltage isnt dropping too much

I have not.

Please explain (idiots guide) and I will get out there with my multimeter (which I don't have a clue how to use)

Have you actually checked the charge rate?

Definatly looks good mate.

Was you getting exactly same fault code then? I've cleaned up a few earths, but can't test car ATM due to wheel gettig refurbed and steelie fouling the caliper

Is the earth strap on the alternator a good connection? I've had this problem before

I replaced my alternator about 3 months ago because it died :( replaced for a second hand one.

When that fault arose, I had battery light on dash permanently

If the battery is in the boot id imagine that its not getting the voltage from the alternaor or the voltage regulator on the alternator is goosed. Strong chance its that because its what... 15+ years old?

Any other ideas?

Battery in boot has both terminals secure.

Earths on rail look decent enough no fraud wires etc. only wire could see looked ok but had playic coating stripped off of it. Was one going into transducer in gearbox

Battery is about one year old.

During that time I did an engine conversion so strikes it was flat, tried to keep it topped up regular by usin a charger, but wasn't always possible.

Any particular earths in general?

I still har the receipt for the battery had a 3/5 year warranty too

Check your earths before anything

I'd be swapping the battery for a known good one.

How old is it?

Finally got myself a code reader and now I know why my engine has been cutting out and driving shit randomly.
