If you hav an aftermarket stereo fitted it may be that,

Take the face off it and see if the speedo works

If it does there is a wire needs cutting in the stereo loom

There is a past thread saying what colour but I can't find it

Speed sensor will be on the gearbox :D

Does the car cut out when you come to a stop?

where is the speed sensor thanks its a 1.6 16v
