Not mainshaft bearing as the mainshaft wouldnt be turning when sat in neutral would be input shaft bearings.

yeah, i had an astra with the same noise, thought it was the release bearing at first, changed that and the noise was still there... got fed up and took it to a gearbox place who straight away said it was the main shaft bearing, had the box overhauled and prob solved!

your right, its not the release bearing.... its the 'main shaft' bearing, an integral part of the gearbox, either live with it or get a recon box.

any good garage wouldnt change a clutch without putting in a full kit including the thrust bearing

if its doing it when the clutch is dis-engaged (i.e. lift up) then it aint the release bearing, the release bearing will only whine when u engage (i.e. push down) the clutch
