Depends

Socket if you can find one the right size, or use a square punch then do it 12, 6, 3, 9 or however.

As long as it goes in square and goes in flush, Should be fine.

what method did you use when refitting the seal?

Its very easy to not put them in right, I done my rear crank seal about 3 times before I got it right

As long as its a good quality seal, it will be fine, GM ones would only be earling (I Believe anyway).
