quote: That's not redlining surely? 1st - 31mph 2nd - 53mph 3rd - 63mph On mine anyway with standard sized wheels so the speedo isn't out more than it should be.

Right, I tried how far i could push my car in each gear - note I did do this after I had been driing around for about 2 hours so it was nice and warm - not worried about damage because I have only done it once or twice.

dont think these engines r designed to be red lined too often! my 1.2 8v is on 83k and head gaskets on its way out and tappets r noisier than ever and water pump needs replacin, thinkin of just gettin a new engine eventually.

thnx for all your help, im going to do a full oil change cause i got some vauxhall stuff in it, probly to thin. if thats doesnt help ill probly scream for a few hours, then decide to have a play with the tapets.

if you stuck a 1.4 engine in i think you would need to change the ecu, and wiring looms maybe? not sure. But it would be better to stick with your current engine really - if its just tappets, and you havnt had much trouble with the car, then keep it, otherwise you may fit a 1.4 and have the same problem down the line... 90k miles on a 1.2 8v is nothing, they go on forever, i know a few nova's with over 125k....and still going strong!

you could swap to a 1.4 60bhp single point injection engine - they are virtually the same, you could get away with using the same loom here, just swop engine and ecu. Can get 1.2 spi's for £100 ish.

my car has developed a right bad tap sound to the engine, i recon its the tapets. Is there any way witch this could be fixed or should i just slap anouther engine in (its done 89000 so might be knackerd). and how much are the engines to buy? could i just put a normal 1.4 in without any extra work? |
