I used to have the same problem he's talking about with a mk3 astra - every time I put the dipstick near the dipstick pipe it ended up covered in oil. I ended up just wrapping a thin rag around the dipstick and giving it a wee clean out.

at my work i see people all the time just taking the dipstick out looking at it and then firing it back in, without wiping it

this doesnt give an accurate reading

exactly my point, does it cover the whole dipstick when you wipe it and re-dip it?

if this is the case i would recomend going to a scrapies and taking a dipstick from another 1.0L 12V and seeing if that solves the problem, as it could have been replaced with the wrong one

are sure you know how to check oil because it seems u have fooked up dipsticks can be cleaned and even if it is dirty when u wipe it it will be dry so the oil level wiil be the WET bit after u have re dipped the dipstick

LOL i know how to check oil level.. but the thing is even when i bought the car the dipstick was all covered in oil, i did an oil change month after i got the car, all was fine..

its only started doing this after the last oil change..

if you wipe the dipstick and then stick it back in, pull it out and then check it, if its still all covered....... youve got far too much in

well i did but i don't seem to be getting a proper reading from it.. the whole dipstick is covered in oil, not just the plastic bit on the bottom.. that how it was all the time...

I recently changed oil and dont really Know howmuch i have put in as i have a big 25l can of oil...

anyway since then top end knocks for about 2 seconds when you start the car.. but it only does it when i don't start it for a day...

i am not sure if i put not enough oil or too much?
