be careful and check there is no starters in the cigarette lighter, as if you cut off the plug they will not work. Is there any kind of circuit inside the light unit, or just the LED's?
If you suspect there are starters, get hold of a female cigarette lighter from halfords or maplins and wire that in, then just plug the LED's into there.

Don't H/U have a perm live for memory and a ignition live for normal power. So couldn't you use the ignition live to run them off or something so they are on at the same time or something.
