If you arent willing to restructure your initial post to make it a bit clearer, do you really expect people to offer any advice?

were the bores much bigger than the pistons

A big end 'knock' will not go away when warmed up.... dont be daft. It may get masked at certain rpms, and be more pronouced on load. You will know if its the big ends.... you must  KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Can you actually re-phrase your question(s) as I'm a little lost as to what your actually asking now.

Big ends can sometimes knock when cold but very rare, because most people goose the big ends when giving big licks which immediatly melts and scores the crank, if the engine hasnt been abused the big ends can make a slight knock from cold but like i said its very rare this is the case.

taps or knocks...

If its a bottom end knock you cant 'mask; that you need to fix it. (bearings)

If its a top end noise it will prob just be the hyd lifters. some may need replaced.... but c20xe are always a bit 'tappety'
