I know on my old car (wasnt a redtop) when I changed the alternater there was a difference in the pulley and I needed to use my old pulley to bring the belt out a bit.

It shouldnt foul the cover, something is wrong, incorrect part fitted or something else isnt set up right.

Is the cover on tight?

The belt is tight, it is almost as if the alternator is set too far back by about 10mm! so the belt constantly rubs on the cambelt cover.

You mean your alternator belt, im assuming?

Tighten it up and try that for start
