Thats only if it goes between a coolant gallery and oil gallery.
It can go inbetween the coolant and cylinder, meaning you will loose coolant(evaporates inside the cylinders), it will overheat and pressurise the cooant system, but you wont get mixing of oil/coolant as the oil gallery section of gasket isn't blown...

im reckoning thats whats gone.
i have no loss in speed though, so im guessing its only just begun to go.

i'll keep it it the garage then take it to get it repaired - rather have it done by someone else as A - just got me a full time job and B - if it buggers up i'll take it back.

need to sell me car soon though :(

Nope, the hissing is just the pressure being released.

If the head gasket had gone the water would be going out of the exhaust pipe.

nope :)

radiator at the minute is for a 1.6.

but the temp never goes above 3/4

but even if the water was boiling i wouldnt see a reason for it to disappear? it'd just condense again.

If you're just running water then it will boil more quickly.

If you aren't loosing water and you don't have any mayo on your filler cap your gasket isn't gone.

Your radiator could be knackerd too, does the temp go down if you run your heaters on hot full blast?

not always

could still be a leak on the water pump or somewhere else, but as for the massive buildup of pressure thats usually due to HG failure.

get a test done on the coolant for traces of exhaust gases, most garages can do it, they just put some paper in it which changes color to indicate it or not.

meaning the water's just geting burnt off?

PaulW

mayo on cap is usually when the gasket blows between a water and oil way.

what your saying sounds like the gasket has gone between a cylinder and a water way.

The waterpump runs from the cambelt, behind the cambelt covers.

not an airlock or something like that? shouldn't be boiling/v.pressurised...... your not taking the cap off whilst warm are you?

Depends where the gasket blows tho.

If it goes in between a oil way and cylinder, you wont loose water or overheat.
It will just burn oil.

no i take the cap off when its cold. as for an air lock could be but i doubt it. air lock wouldnt result in loss of water?

Sounds like it.

Or the waterpumps fooked, leaking water and not circulating.

Boiling/very pressurised header tank

loss of water

Head gasket going? :(
