Don't dry it with a hair dryer either. It can cause it to go out of shape.

Stick it in the airing cupboard overnight.

As said Halfords sell cleaning kits, bit messy and don't over oil it.

Do you have any k&n or similar cleaning fluid and oil?
First off you tap the filter gently to remove loose particles, then run it under a warm tap to clean out a bit more of the crap. You then apply the k&n cleaning fluid or similar and let it soak in, then wah it off.
Then once it's totally dry, you need to reapply the filter oil (which is there to make all the incoming shit stick to it and stop it going into your engine).
You should be able to get a filter cleaning kit from halfords or maybe even ebay.

Anybody know the best way the clean an airfilter, it's a cotton gauze (sp) one on my XE.
