Actually it's there to warm the cat up quicker.

hardly going to make a difference though. for CATS to be efficient they need to be warmed up for a good half an hour before they work properly. hardly going to help warming it up by whipping down the shops

this is how it works. when cold starting the engine, the hot air valve inside the airbox will be fully open, and let in as much hot air into the airbox as possible until up to temperature, or the perfect temperature for best emissions/economy. if full throttle is applied though, the hot air valve will shut off immediately to provide cooler air and better performance. Its controlled via vacuum, which is the little red pipe that runs from the airbox to the inlet. it measures the density of air inside the box.
You could fit an XE airbox, which doesnt have this hot air trunking and valve, and plug up the vacuum pipe with a screw/nail. also you will need to cover up the hole left on the manifold from the trunking.
