common prob on no modded XE's if you hammering them around tight bends i read up. you'll often see a puff of smoke if the breather mod isnt done.

That baffle is mainly to stop the oil from foaming up around the crankshaft and rods...

yup..... but its as usefull as OJC....

Really need fins (with little flaps) welded into the sump, across it

them c20xe do have baffles in the sump as they have a baffle plate, fits between block and sump

should completely stop it, but only if you fit the catch tank thingy

Cheers guys - it may be a tad too much oil actually. Always keep it right at the max or a little over with having a leaky sump, just incase one day it starts to leak more than the norm.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease, big smoke from a car used to worry me to death - its nothing really at the end of the day in my case. :)

Nothing you can do about it really, the engine is pretty 'simple' on the insides so stuff like that happens. You either put up with it, fit a catch tank and/or have baffles welded into the sump to stop the oil sloshing about so much...

normally happens when oil is too full....

just oil getting sucked up the breather into the TB then mixed into the combustion mixture

Is this normal then? If not any idea's why its happeneing to me? Oil level is fine, I have a leaky sump anyhow so its checked & topped slightly every few hundred miles.

I may perhaps one day get around to the breather mod which i've known about ages but are you saying this will or wont help my engine burning oil?

It only happens on mad rally stylee cornering (out of roundabouts), which doesn't happen often these days but its rather embarrising leaving a hoooge cloud behind me!

But you are right, there are no baffles in the sump.

Or get some fins welded into your sump. Or get a dry sump :o

take the rocker cover off and remove the screws that hold the plate inside into it, theres about 12 i think. Then drill holes in the plate and put it back in after giving the whole lot a damn good clean.

Then remove the 2 breather pipes from the back of the rocker cover that go the the inlet manifold and send the bigger of the 2 round to a catch tank for the oil. i wouldnt bother trying to return the oil.

Re-routing the breather to a catch tank should stop the oil being sloshed down the breather into the inlet manifold, then being burnt.

The holes in the plate are nothing to do with the oil being burnt but its worth doing as there supposed to just help the engine idle better or something, cant remember it was ages ago when i did mine.

pic robbed off mig here-

Just wondered if some of the engine bofs knew whats wrong with my C20XE lump. I've noticed that its burning oil on high revs coming out of tight bends. I have a theory that the sump might not be baffled, therfore the oil is swooshing about and somehow getting pulled upto the head and burnt? Anyone else any idea's?

I know its nothing major as it never ever smokes at any other times than sometimes after major revs out bends. :boggle:
