and when you tension a new belt up, you'll strain and kill the bearings in the water pump anyway... had this on a rover vvc lump... twice, the muppets

 i think a new engine might be the best idea........although as ive said the corsa is my everyday car, im sticking to minis ive decided, even if i do put a XE in the mini :P

belts off now anyway, didnt have to slacken the water pump as the haynes said it just took alot of getting off

gotta find the new belt now :o

It would be easier if i had someone at mine to stand on the brakes ;)

so what have you learned for the next time you do a timing belt;)

put the car in fifth gear... get someone to stand on the break.... why everyone has so much trouble with this i dunno......:o

make sure you line up yer timing marks before you remove the belt...

smack it with a hammer, the jolt'll get it off without tuning the engine over... much

britaxcooper

also a little help required in getting the larger pulley off the end of the crank, haynes doesnt seem to mention that, i got the torx socket but how do you lock it in place so you can undo the nut without turning the engine over

britaxcooper

just went for the t*atting method, worked well  belts off :D

just this bolts to go now, i really need to get this new belt on by 1:30pm :o

Siberia

get an iron bar... your jack handle will do... put it against the altenator and use the bulkhead of the car to lever it altenator towards the engine...

dont take no shit form it :|

off topic.. Adam d......i can now see why you were able to use the v-belt with your conversion... its a different altenator on the 1.2 8v:P:D

Try to "persuade" the top of the alternator towards the front of the car... a good hammer works well for this purpose

britaxcooper

no bolts there for sure :o

britaxcooper

The haynes lies, i was reading the bit about NO air con/PAS

The bolt on the top "slide" is out as you can see, that was a torx bolt just from one side.

Rileysport

Bolt on the "slide" at the top of the inlet manifold... slacken that off, its a 15mm both sides i think, the alternator wll then pivot towards the front of the car, the spring tensioner is only on 16v cars or those with PAS/ Air con

britaxcooper

put some WD on the bolt and i cant move it. I dont know if its what im ment to do to take it off, i dont really have much experience with modern cars. Minis are easyier :look:

Ill have another go at this bolt now...

mmmm is it not moving because its too stiff? maybe abit of WD40 will help?

Trying to change my cam belt this morning, needs to be done before this evening.

Anyway I just cant get the alternator belt off, its a 8v 1.4 B, ive undone the torx bolts 3 of them around the top of the alternator but it wont move to slacken off the belt, the haynes mentions a spring tensioner yet i cant make any sense of that or see one. Theres a bolt under the alternator which it may pivot on? about 16mm dia. but its tight solid so help me please.

Also when undoing the water pump allen bolts, i can see 2 but i cant get to the otehr :o
