would a pressure test determine whether it is a gasket problem? or any other problem?

Just a thought.....
If i was to do all this, would there be a better option to tune up the engine at the same price instead of going back to standard fix? or would i have to pay sh!tloads more to get it tuned?

prices vary as its a very labour intensive job its a head off, new gaskets and a head skim possibly also :( See if you can find a decent mechanic as Vaux will string you up by your balls :(

Dont just stick thicker oil in it wont solve it.

you got a 1.4/1.6 16v? If so stick to 10/40 and when topped up run the car and check the rate at which its burning/loosing oil.

I suspect what u mentioned earlier piston rings/valve stem seals. Keep an eye out for blue smoke tis a give away that this will need doing.

try some 15/40, failing that you'll be looking at stem seals or piston rings :(

It looks like my engine oil is running low again. It had done 70017miles when it went in for a service, now it is on 71590miles and the oil light comes on when i go round corners or round abouts. It also makes tapping noises when i first switch on the engine.

Any reason why the car is using so much oil? i have checked for obvious leaks but no signs of oil stains on the roads.

Any help would be appreciated.
