a decent alt can be anything from 60 quid (for something out of a corsa diesel down the scrappies) to 500 quid for a re-wound/custom made jobby.

As for the "big 3" - basically its replacing the cabling between the alternator and chassis, alternator and battery, battery to chassis with bigger gauge cable - like 0/1/2 gauge cable :)

basically there just like a small battery that charge up quicker and can release the stored power quicker.

However, your right in a way - they put alot of strain on your already existing electric system, hence why its better to upgrade your battery and "Big 3" first, and if that fails go for the alternator :)
Caps SHOULDNT be used to solve power problems...instead you put them into a system to generally smooth it all out as well as to supply abit more juice to your amps when they require it etc

if you NEED it then yes, but i would spend your cash on things that would ACTUALLY help mate - like battery upgrade, alternator upgrade and the cheap Big 3 upgrade of a few cable underneath your bonnet
