on a 1.4 16v the only sign of headgasket failure is usually loss of coolant into number 4 cylinder, eventually resulting in clouds of white smoke!
A lot of people have also had this preceeded by gurgling behind the centre console!

if you have no other signs of head gasket failure, i would tend to say that it probably isnt the problem, but never say never!!

why would a faulty water pump cause loss off coolant? leaking?

might have to get me mechanic to check it all out when it goes for MOT in a couple of weeks if it is still alive by then

if there's no residue in oil or exhaust sounds like waterpump going/gone, mine did that around 70k. have a listen down by timing belt side for a 'rattley' noise, if there is a noise thats what it'll be.

its only got 64k on the clock, might have to check spark plug 4 tomorrow then, i've never had any problems with it though (changed the set about 5000 miles ago i think)

the water jacket on the 1.4 16v is very close to no 4 cylinder!

You may have difficulty in removing the spark plug from number 4 cylinder due to corrosion!

compresion test will tell you what the level of compression is in each cylinder and if the head gasket has gone then the compression will be a lot lower

Is it a problem with the 1.4 16v and the headgasket or is it just thet they are getting to that age

how do i do i compression test and what is it testing compression of? if you mean does it go hiss when i take off the bottle top cos there is pressure build up then yes it does. headgasket set with all other bits will only set me back about £50 and a day or so of work on it with help from a mate who knows how.

Have any of you had the head gasket go on urs???

a friend has a 1.2 8v, coolant kept disappearing, found it was leaking hose, replaced it and a couple of weeks after head gasket died.

Now i've just noticed my coolant in my 1.4 sport is dropping in the same way (can't find leaking hose) and was wondering if mine is going same way? no milky shit in oil, and zorst fumes don't show any signs of water being burnt (not burnt but you know what i mean).

Advice???
