11:1 is 6 bar, cause you add one for the atomsphere, that's a spot on reading  The most important thing is that they're the same. Also heat in the engine will cause the rpessure to be slightly raised.
I'd check if your breather is clogged first and see if the oil breather can vent ok, otherwise could cause the stem seals to have vapour forced out. Miles had this, he cleaned it out and was fine after.

if you find another c16xe itll probably still smoke, think vauxhall built them that way!

My rebuild cost me £1250- top job aswell. That included lightened flywheel aswell.

I think the only way to stop the problem is to sort your own engine out before doing any mods.

That's my opinion.

I had smokey engine syndrome - had the cylinder head stripped, ported and polished. Built it all up, and it still smoked! Had the bottom end done, which cured it and gave the engine a new lease of life (obviously!). The piston rings were completely gone!

that would make the compression low........?

Probably the piston rings - same thing happened in my GSi.

haynes says compression ratio of 11:1
which makes my reading 5bar high :S

that 232psi! i would say a tad high!! what are the normally, about 150psi? even if the head was skimmed i doubt it would be that high!! id hope it was a dodgy tester

hi guys, as some may know i had a problem with a smokey engine.
as suggested on here i did a compression test with a friend.
we got a reading of 16bar off all cylinders, which we both agreed seemed high.
the engine is a c16xe, with 45mm taper throttle bodies, im not sure if the head has been skimmed to raise the compression or anything.
is it possible to have bought a faulty guage?

any help would be appreciated, cheers
