idle control valve may need replacing or a good clean - had the same problem on mine when I first had it; dont know where it is on the GSI - but on mine it was easily accessible - took it offthe front of the throttle body housing - gave it a godo clean with degreaser/gunk and a toothbrush - and worked fine until...... - just hope u havnt got the same problem as Ive just had repaired - as thats how mine started with high revs
turned out to be a right bodged up wiring job that some blind monkey had done b4 I had the car

heaters: mine take a while to warm up, a good 5 mile till they are nice and warm, but if its taking a stupidly long time to warm up there may be an air lock in your radiator system somethere, it used to happen to my metro, there was a bleed screw on one of the hoses which i just undone and you could hear air hissing out and leave the screw out till fluid started coming through again, then it worked fine.
Idling: not really sure what the problem could be. may be the cable sticking somewhere (get some wd40 on all of the visible parts where the cable joins anything). failing that there might be a screw somewhere (not sure about multi point injection models) by the injection unit which the throttle cable connects to and it can be slightly adjusted to set the tickover properly. sounds more like the cable sticking somewhere tho if it was idling ok before.

hope this helps mate
