i have come across engines where by the oil comes out as normal (in respect to colour and consisteny) but would be preceded by a clear much faster flowing liquid!

If it was water you would know about it. The oil would be grey rather than black.

adam, its mearly condensation forming in the sump over time. Wouldnt worry about it, just go and give it a long hard drive to warm it right up and should cure any problems.

The engine is currently in bits again as its dropped a couple of valves, but this would not cause the water to mix with oil.

the head gasket went, so i changed it. at the same time i pulled the sump off to put a set of arp rod bolts in and gave the sump a thorough cleaning.

how do you know its not head gasket? Cream under the filler cap is one of many signs of headgasket gone, but not always present.
