Welcome to the site mate. You've picked up on a thread from 2004 though.

You'd probably be better making your own thread with info on what happens when it whines, what engine etc.

Over the last couple of days ive noticed a whirring/whining noise coming from my car. The note changes with speed, and seemed to change under acceleration but not dependent on the revs (ie accelerate up to say 3k with the noise, then ease off but keep at 3k then the noise goes) I thought it might have been the fuel pump, but then i realised the noise goes away totally when you depress the clutch, and it seems to be worse in 3rd gear. Does it sound like my gearbox is on the way out, or could the oil level be low or something like that? If so, how do you check it and top it up too?!
