i beleive you are thinking about the DIS module, which is a distributorless ignition system.
this keeps the spark distribution electronic rather than mechanical, but you still have HT leads coming from the DIS and going to the spark plugs.

ive had a similar prob 1.2 8v (yes diff engine) damp in ht leads where they join spark plugs. Started sound, put your foot down, sounded like it misfired, sat at traffic lights, coughed farted, then stalled had to be towed in. Put new ht's on never struggled since!

how does the spark get from the DIS to the plugs :boggle:

could be coolant temp sensor

there aint ht leads, fuses all ok, plugs ok and injector cleanor has been put through system?

i never ealised they had idle speed adjustment as they are fuel injected.

there should be an idle control valve somewhere which may need a clean.
also look for unmetered air getting in after the air flow meter, so check for splits in the air trunking.

clogged air or fuel filter?
plugs should last yeras, but they may be duff. condition of ht leads?
could even be something as simple as bad earthing points.
all fuses ok?
