Got the car back at dinner time.

It was the water pump after all.

If a water pump fails it would usually be the bearings so you would tend to get a rumbling or squeaking noise rather than ticking. It's also usually accompanied by weeping of coolant from the pump area.
There is a simple test you could try to find out where the noise is coming from - it's not very scientific but it does work. Take a length of wood and place the end against the component you want to listen to and put your ear to the other end of the timber - this will let you hear the noise from each part separately and so isolate the source but take care not to get in the way of any moving parts like drive belts!:)

Might be a bearing on the alternator...

THere is a slight rubbing and ticking noise coming from the timing belt area so i have been told it is the water pump on its way out.

The belt was changed at its first interval and the cars only done 50,000 now.

So how long have i got before the pump needs changed and will it be ok to drive the car just now?
