It's an X14XE. Do I get rid of airlocks by running it with the cap off etc? Rad is fine. Don't think it's head gasket. Vaux did a pressure test on the cooling system and said it failed? Any ideas, anyone?

what engine is it?
The reason you dont get hot air all the time is that your running it with virtually no water (not enough to go into the heater matrix) . you need to check the water everyday if its leaking.
check all the water pipes
and make sure there are no airlocks in the cooling system.

is your rad rusty anywhere? if so its leaking,

check your oil for white slime

Engine overheating when water level goes down, topping up bout 1 litre of water every 100 miles or so. Thing is, can't see it leaking anywhere. Dont always get hot air out of interior ventilation system, and rad isnt red hot after driving.

Could this be caused by a fucked water pump?
