Yes

Use a deep drop 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while you have a small spanner (i forget the size) on the top to stop the damper from turning.

I tried to lower me car but then found i didn't have a 17mm deep for the top nut.
i was told that you need a special tool to hold the shock in place while you take the top nut off.
is this true?

im sure you can hold the top of the shock to stop it from spinning:o
