yesh, because if it was a new vdub polo i would tell you its a clutch master cylinder, but as its a cable operated clutch i would say the cable is outta adjustment (prob stretched)

If it is, itl make a high pitch squeeling noise when its in neutral and the clutch pedal is pressed. One of the many fun and intresting noises my car makes :)

I will still move as normal, just not enough to completely pull the clutch plates apart. It has to be a clutch problem or it wouldn't go into gear with the engine off.

because when the engine is running the flywheel/clutch plate are spinning
if you have your car turned off
you can put it in gear without the clutch because the clutchplate and flywheel arent spinning

Dave

Because you dont need to use the clutch when the engine is not running:boggle:

so wot does this have to do with engine running and not running?

Dave

^^^^^^Like he said!

Some cars auto adjust for clutches too,I know some Fords do. Vauxhalls dont though, thats why the adjuster is there on the cable.

no if its maladjusted to wear itll be tricky getting it in gear coz the clutch isnt fully pressed to get it in a gear go out to your car press the clutch halfway and try and get it in gear, it wont by adusting it you are pulling it more so itll engage a gear i know ive done it on my car.
like the rear brakes are auto adjusting due to wear you are adjusting the clutch due to wear

Kerry

but then wouldnt it slip :boggle:

Adjust the clutch cable first like Adam said. Its straightforward to do,just make it so the pedal sits a bit higher in the car, it's probablt just that your clutch pedal isn't going far enough down to fully engage the clutch.

Hello to all hope you had a good Xmas

Right, the other day out of no where selecting the initial gear became near impossible and is still this way. I just get a huge crunch if i try to put the car in reverse and so i have to turn the car off, select reverse keep my foot on the clutch and turn it back on.

Obviously there is a problem as it takes a lotta effort to select other gears as well when the engine is running, but when its off they go into gear no problem. The clutch cable is moving correctly as i have checked but don't really have a clue what is wrong with the car.

PS once it is in gear there are no problems, i.e. the clutch does not slip nothing

Any suggestions would be much appreciated
