Good call Ian thanks, the car didn't have any plates on it tho as it is in the breakers, I will try cleaning up that area a bit more to see if there are any more codes

Is it not stamped in the same place that the other code you found is? (70770), I'm pretty sure mine was on my 16xe, it might be a bit further down than that number though, will have to clean the surface up a lot

Can you get the reg number of the car? Engine number is in the Vauxhall catalogue I think, which means it the numbers match it has what it was built with.

Are there any easy ways to differentiate these 2 engines?
I have looked at the number stamped on the engine block beside where the gearbox joins but seems to be a meaningless number (70770 from memory). So is there somewhere on the engine where it says if it is 1.4 or 1.6?
The clues on the car such as the reg, 140mph clocks and 256mm brakes are all there to suggest it is a 1.6 but I suspect it has had an engine change in the past from what I have heard about the car. I know that the inlet cam pulley will have the engine code stamped under the washer but I don't think the breakers will let me start stripping the engine for identifying marks! Any help appreciated thanks
