its a lifter. i can put my life on it. How many miles has ur car got. Vauxhalls are notorious for this. Like miles says. Its the thickness of the oil. Try flushing ur engine oil with that engine flush u get from halfords. Think STP do a range of stuff, then change the oil and filter. If it dont go away then do what miles says, Take them out and replace them.

Ur engine will run fine as it is. Dont worry.

As for crackshaft, u trying to give the boy a heart attack.

How does the timing being wrong make a noise when its cold anyway?

Where do you people get your ideas from!

As said, water pump or idlers or cam timing wont make noises that go away when its warm.

Crankshaft? Nothing like scaring him! why would the crank make a cold only noise?

IT WILL BE THE LIFTERS or an oil thickness problem.

could be the crankshaft, if so that's fking expensive!

tensioners or water pump wudnt make ticking go away when engines warm. might b your timing. get it checked out. or just do it urself

take the side cover off, just 2 bolts, and check that the markings line up.

mine has always had a ticking noise in it from 10000 miles, been back to vaux more times than i can remember, got over 40k on now and it dosent seem to do the engine any harm i wouldnt worrie to much about it, just make sure your timing belt and tensioners are ok, apart from that, dont worrie or try some slick 50 oil treatment.

and they stop making a noise when they are warm?

yep most probably the hydraulic lifters.
mine did this alot in the winter.

It will be lifters. Just because they are self adjusting doesn't rule them out.

How many miles has the engine done?

They do wear out and become dirty after a while.

To save replacing them you can take them out and clean them, but they are only about £6/7 each to buy new.

May be worth trying an oil flush first.

cheers, i'll check em soon as. any other suggestions are welcome

andypsgwide

maybe the hydraulic lifter's taping due to the oil being thicker when cold

water pump?

engine makes annoying ticking noice when cold, which goes when warm. ive ruled out tappets cos they're self adjusting, and timing belt cos the sound stops. any suggestions would be gratefully received
