how much? Whats the realistic outcome? Purchase price of the car?
I've seen a few SC'd saxo's.... quick but havent seemed to reliable :lol:

What car are you wanting to Turbo/SC?
Have you factored in lowering compression? HG, pistons?
It's a 106 gti, a company does everything, pistons the lot. I just wanted to know about it.

best for your money would be not doing it or buying a turbo or SC'd car to start with. It will be better built and more reliable.... not to mention cheaper!
What car are you wanting to Turbo/SC?

Probably more reliable than a turbo.
There's two types of SC, centrifugal (Rotrax) and screw (Eaton).
Centrifugal SCs are basically the same as a turbo, but in place of the exhaust turbine on one side, you have a pulley and gearing system that allows the compressor wheel to spin upto high RPMs. These are the most common aftermarket SCs as they can be more easily mounted.
A screw type SC has two close fitting, interlocking screws (look like twisted and tapered bits of metal) that spin against each other to suck in air, compress it and blow it into the intake. This is the sort that you find on a Cooper S for example. This sort of SC is more commonly used as OEM equipment as it is part of the inlet manifold and requires a bespoke intake.
They're usually used to get big power from big capacity engines, I know of a Corvette V8 with 2 screw type superchargers pushing out 1200 bhp.
Having said that, there are instances of people using SCs and turbos together, what's known as "compound charging", but thats a whole different kettle of fish...

OK, how does it actually boost?? Sorry but i've never actually looked into them before therefore having no knowledge at all, I love the sound of them!!! Do they offer the same sort of gains to turbo's??? Are they reliable??

Superchargers are driven by a belt in the same way an alternator is for instance, unlike the turbo which is driven by exhaust gasses passing over the turbine blades.
Superchargers are generally boosting throughtout the rev range yes, although some have a clutch mechanism thatallows you to set when they spool up. They're fairly easy to up the boost on too, as it can be done by installing a smaller pulley
Adv over turbo = no lag, can sound amazing
Dis over turbo = lots more expensive to install.

Ok, the car i'm thinking of getting needs something doing to it to make it a bit more special.
I was thinking of turbocharging it, then thought of supercharging.
But i don't really know any thing about superchargers!
Am i right in saying that they boost constantly (no lag) and boost the same amount throughout the rev range, ie don't drop of like turbos??
As i said i don't really know anything about them, just really tempted as it's a bit different.
Thanks for any info, any opinions welcome, or adv/disadv over turbos would be much appreciated.:thumbs:
