so if i start car and put the sensor wire onto the chassis is should send the needle sky high

taking the thermostat off proves that it's not stuck open which could cause the temp gauge to not move much off of 90.

if you ground the blue wire that goes to the temp sender it should whack the gauge round to max.
if it doesn't swing the needle then you've either a break in the wire or a dodgy gauge.
if it does swing the needle then you've possibly got a bad connection between connector and sensor, or the sensor is goosed.

is it safe to just take it out and then put it back again after i have checked it? or do i need to do something else first

Yep. Just above and left is the bottom 1/2 of the housing for it.

GTS-T Rob

the thing sitting by itself yeah?

under the thermostat. the one on the right which is more goldy.

stat could also be stuck open.
if so it's fubar.
3 10mm bolts hold it on so it's a piece of piss to check.

the top hose from the rad goes to the thermostat. it will be just there with another sensor which has 2 wires

GTS-T Rob

lee mitchell

its a single wire by the thermostat with a spade connector. more than likely its come off
