very unlikely to have done any important damge to the pistons, may have marked them but so what.
I took the head off my 1.4 engine today (about 3 months after i took it out the car after snapping the belt) and i'd bent all 16 valves and smashed the guides. The least i have seen on a 1.4/1.6 16v vaux engine is 10 bent valves you wont be lucky!!

A spare 1.4 16v i have in the shed was rev'd to 9k and suffered pump up on the lifts and clipped the exhaust valves (all of them) and dented the pistons too. It ran for another 20k then i pulled it apart to find that :O
Proves you can be lucky.

Worse case is that its bent all the valves, guides etc and maybe damaged pistons.

What engine?

new engine will probably be cheapest option.

all the valves are probably bent and all the pistons will be al least marked
