th ecoolant temp sensor dosnt control the fan, it senses the temp of the engine and adjusts fueling to suit, so this could also contrubute to bad running and feul consumption

quote: really :! well i think that deffinatly needs changing then but the coolant temp sensor i think is ok, as the car doesnt overheat as the fan kicks in at right temp

These two sensors cannot be cleaned, if they mess up they do need replacing, the coolant temp one is about £12 the lambda is £35-75 depending on where ya go.

Lambda sensor is in the exhaust manifold you will see the probe sticking out, the light dosnt have to come on for these to stop working, they just become lazy in operation, the collant temp sensor is on the left hand side of the thermostate which is on the end of the big blck pipe coming from the left hand top of rad as you look at car from front

quote: were abouts is this then??? every journey i do the fan always turns on as engine gets too hot, mainly because of the type of driving i do as i often get caught in traffic, and the gsi's overheat pretty rapidly!!!

Well if there is shit going through the exhaust, its probably fucked ya lambda, if this goes it effects ya MPG and performance, also having an exhaust and filter causes slight overfueling and the unburnt fuel entering the manifold can damage the lambda too
