My car failed it's MOT.

It cost £35 for the MOT but i get a free re-test within 14 days.

It is booked in on 2moro morning to bring it up to scratch.
Its costing me £127 for the work being done.

It failed on emissions, i was told the exhaust has deterioated and needs a new backbox.

The other thing it failed on was the wheel allignment and there was some play in some parts that had something to do with this.

I was expecting to pay a bit more to get it thru its MOT. But this sound a reasonable price to fix the problems. MOT is needed so i can sell the car.

B4 i sell the car there are a couple of other things that need sorting.

The clutch biting point is really high now, does this mean it needs a new clutch ??

Also handbrake light comes on when i turn right, i've checked the brake fluid level and it looks OK, How can i solve this??

I don't know much about cars so your comments are welcome. I just wanna get the car into a reasonable condition so i can sell it, but at the same time i don't want to spend loads of money.

It's done 94K, dunno if its the first clutch.

I've just noticed it is really high now and it is making it a bit shitty to drive.

A faulty backbox might cause an increase in noise level but it will have squat-all effect on emissions - did they say why it failed on emissions?

No they didn't say why it failed emissions, they just said the new backbox would solve it because the old one had deterioated.

Then they're telling you porkies. A failure on emissions is to do with engine and/or cat performance. Once the exhaust gases have passed the cat into the rest of the exhaust, they'll remain unchanged

Well they're doing the re-test so if they pass it i ain't bothred.

A backbox sounds cheaper then engine repairs, maybe i'm wrong??

Yes, How does the condition of a silencer affect your emissions? It will be the CAT or the engine.

I'll ring up this afternoon see what they say?

The fella i spoke to didn't do the test he said " it failed on emissions"

then I asked him what it needed he went into the garage and asked what it needed.
when he came back he said " it just needs a new backbox mate" "that'll solve the emissions problem.

Just got the results sheet in front of me now:

Here are some details:
On the customer copy it says:

1, Steering Mechanism/system = FAIL - Excess play in both offside and nearside track rod ends. £35 each plus VAT
May need wheel allignment £15 +VAT

2, Exhaust System =FAIL - exhaust system deteriorated. £27.50 inc VAT

3, Emissions Failure. + should be clearded up by new backbox.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS FROM THE EMISSIONS TEST, THIS MAY GIVE SOMEONE SOME INSIGHT INTO WHAT'S NEEDED.

Fast idle test: FAIL

Then there are three catergories, CO, HC then a funny looking symbol. well it says fail next to this symbol, should be between 0.970-1.020, it was 1.120. ( i don't know what this is)

Also second fast idle test = FAIL

COMMENTS / WHATS WRONG ??

I think the handbrake light comes on round bends cos your pads are low, but i'm not too sure

Handbrake light comes on when pads are low as more fulid is needed in the calipers to make up for the lack of pad. This in turn makes the brake fulid bottle lower thus making the handbrake light come on.

That funny looking sybol will be Lambda. This is the amount of Oxygen found in the exhaust gasses. High reading could be down to needing a new lambda sensor. I have heared that putting a new backbox on will sort out emmisions.. but i suppose if your exhaust has a hole in it (failed for exhaust deteriation), then it may draw through some air, which will put your lambda value artificially high.

Also check your intake manifold gasket, as mine had gone, which put the reading higher than it should have been.
