go on then fool.

Inlet manifold only becomes a pain when you have to start changing valves etc, or obviously a skim. But for the sake of assesing damage I'd leave it on, its easier to remove off the car as well.

I'm playing the averages game here and judging by what everyone has said, i'm at the lower end of potential cost. Sure - i could probably source another engine for 300 or 400 but then once I've waited (and paid) for delivery and had it fitted etc I'm sure it'd come to around the same price. Also my engine was running really well (before it ground into pieces!) so hoping it can get back to its old form.

Exactly, miles where can u get 1.4 16v engines for £250 right away???
Most people wudnt want there car out of action for ages and have the hassle of getting the engine to a garage etc... to replace the blown engine with another second hand engine!!!!!!
My car now has an engine that had done 0 miles was BRAND new has a full vaux warrenty and works absolutely perfectly. I paid a bit extra but its peace of mind!

I put a wanted out on a find a part service once for a 1.4 16v engine, had about 4/5 offers, ranging from about £300-£500, complete with all box, loom, ecu, alternator etc, so take all that away and you will be paying about £250 for the basic lump, then you still have alot to sell. Would cost about £50 in shipping. Changing the engine is a bit drastic without piston damage, but fitting another complete head would be worthwhile.

scorchingpost, 1.6 will be a dearer by a bit but not a lot.

On mine the valves, valve guides, pistons and head were damaged, so a new engine made sense!

I paid from VAUX direct for a BRAND NEW 0 mile 1.4 16v including cam belt and tensioners etc... £850 with a full years warrenty so when u can pay £500 second hand i thnik this was a pretty good deal.
Also means when i go to sell car i have all the vaux documentation proving the engine is new etc....

1.6 engines cost more, heads are good as the same. Engine parts cost the same.

OK - update.
Car fixed £700+VAT, then had service and MOT and all the rest. Total £983.
BUT................................
engine goes on M1 down to london at the weekend. Loud rattling from round cam belt area - car towed back to garage at cost of £113 and back to square 1.
Anyone with any experience of having big arguments with garages??

for £950 you could have had a new reconned engine from vaux....

however the garage should hold liability if a part they fitted was faulty... if that doesn't work then it to the solicter.
