When i first got my corsa 1.2 16v i noticed that if i floored the accelerator from a standstill it would sometimes loose all power at certain rpms.

I have used optimax unleaded (98ron) for 3 tankfulls and this hasn't occured.

Yesterday i was forced to use super unleaded 97 ron, and i got the effect again!

I'm wondering if with anything below 98 ron the car is pinking and the noc sensor is screwing the power up.

It only happenes if i accelerate hard, which your average granny driving a ocrsa wouldn't do with 95 ron fuel in.

I've heard BP are bringing out 100 ron fuel soon.

But this might be overkill and i don't know whether the corsa ECU has been designed for it.

I'm not saying righter octane fuel gives better power!

I'm saying it seems to cure the strange problem i used to have, which resulted in a loss of power.

Higher octane only gives more power if it enables you to increase the compression ratio of your engine.... which isn't the case on a 1.2 16v.

right here we go, most european engines are developed using 98RON petrol, so therefore the engine runs at maxmium efficeny on the 98RON, if you put lower RON rating in then the engine retards the timing to copensate for the shitter petrol

think of it as running yourself on Water & Lucozade Sport

Water will get you there in the end
Lucozade will get you there quicker but will cost you more

comprende?

NB, jap engines are developed using 99-100RON thats why they need octane booster etc

gambit: if the engine has been designed for 98 ron then why do vauxhall tell you to use 95 ron in it?

I've been running mine on Optimax over the summer while not been doing much millage, but back to cheap stuff in a couple of weeks when have to drive into Manchester everyday when go back to uni!
I think Optimax has made it run smoother than normal shell unleaded fuel.

As i understand it the knock sensor detects 'pre-ignition' which can be caused by the fuel being too lean (not enough of in makes it explosive) in the air. Or because the fuel isn't high enough octane (low octane self combusts at lower pressures) pressures.

So the knock sensor detects this about to happen and stop the damage to your engine by adjusting the ignition timing.

basically it senses engine knock which is basically just vibration caused by pre-ignition!
