I need to get rid of the ex Mrs Jambo's engagement ring. Cost me in the region of £2500 from a jewellers in the lanes in Brighton and its an antique white gold/diamond ring from around 1920's IIRC.

Never sold anything like this before and what I have read online so far is contradictory and weird.

Anyone got any advice? I know I am not going to get back what I paid but I obviously don't want to get ripped off either. The ring doesn't have a "certificate" so I suppose I need to get one of these first, any idea on cost??

Thanks for looking

Get it GIA certified and take it to Hatton Garden and see what they will pay. Sell it to whoever offers the most. Selling it any other way will be hassle IMO.

It will probably come down the how much of a "premium" you paid (i.e. if you buy from Goldsmiths on the high street you will pay loads more for the same ring compared to a small jewelers.)

Thanks James, I purchased it from a small private jewellers so hopefully didn't get ripped off too bad.

Where do I go about getting a GIA certification?

Post pics, may treat the Mrs

Most decent jewellers can offer a GIA certificate (thorough external labs I believe), hit two or three up to ensure accuracy.

Actually somewhere in Hatton Garden would also certify it. You will probably need to make an appointment.

I used Cool Diamonds in Hatton Garden, they seem pretty good.

bought my Mrs Engagement Ring from a wholesaler who made us the ring for £3k got a certificate for its retail price of £8.5k for insurance purpose. Looked in some shops and similar products. Gives you an idea of mark up of new rings. However Antiques prob have that new prem taken off them,.

You must be rolling in dough to spend in excess of £1000 on an engagement ring

Relatively speaking Its the other way around.. The platinum/gold holds its value the Diamond will be worth a fraction of the retail price..

Buying a diamond is like buying a new car, the value plummets the moment you drive it off the forecourt..

A Diamonds value is mainly from man made trade agreements, not through rarity. True story.

Surely that depends how much h you actually paid for it in the first place?

Or do you just know everything there is to know about buying and selling everything on the planet, oh wise one?

I'm happy to be corrected but unless said £2,500 ring is a fucking monster I'm pretty confident he was spanked just like everybody else

I can neither confirm nor deny the diamond is a monster, as for some reason, Jambo hasn't posted pics.
