Do you get points for no tax or just a fine if caught driving?

I'd assume it would be points AND take the vehicle away, i.e. same as no insurance.

This probably depends on if the tax has just expired, or if the vehicle is already declared SORN Andrew.

FAR worse outcome re the latter I would have thought. As that would presumably be very deliberate law breaking.

Now the new system is in place you are supposed to TAX or SORN the vehicle online the moment you buy it.

I realise you can't transfer tax.

However, if the vehicle is currently taxed it won't show up as not taxed until dvla have been informed it is sold.

This.

If it's currently taxed then just insure it and you are good to go. The tax status only changes when they receive the log book.
