Renewing the carpet in the living room/stairs and landing and thought i'd chuck down some quality underlay this time.

Last time we had new carpet was 5 years ago and we didn't take very good care of it, so this time I want to do everything properly.

Thing is, I read online about the 11mm cloud 9 underlay being a bit of a pain with regards to fitting on stairs. Unsure whether this is true or not, but would rather not waste my time and money buying and trying it out.

Is the 11mm cloud 9 underlay that good? Or is the less thick one (9mm) better for my particular application?

I cloud 9d my living room floor, laid it myself like a boss (along with the gripper) and saved a fortune! All the advise I read said to tape the joints and to staple the underlay to the boards a few times (not too much as it can buckle apparently) so I imagine you could do that on the stairs? It's nice underfoot and was dirt cheap really.

Was that the 11mm one Pow? Plan is to lay it myself. Done upstairs underlay and laminate flooring myself and made a good job of it

I ordered 11mm Cloud 9 from eBay. Cheapest by far to any shop I found:

Can't comment on the stairs but would be interesting to know as it might get done in the future.

My uncle is a carpet fitter and quoted me £35 a roll for 15sqm. That's trade price, so try your local carpet warehouse and see if you can get a deal. Could also see if they'll sell you a half roll to do the stair treads.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Thanks all, probably need about 20m2 in total. £70 from the eBay link Graham put up which isn't bad at all for quality stuff.

Carpet right wanted 8-9 quid a m2 for 7-8mm stuff

Yeh we got our carpet from Carpet Giant, they didn't believe me when I told them what I'd bought the underlay, so I have no idea what they would have charged, but I don't think he would have got near it!

Ben look for blue heaven underlay, that doesn't have a paper top like cloud 9 underlay which can end up being noisy under foot.

Either that or cosi 10mm is very good, that's what I supply for my jobs.

I wouldnt use it on stairs.

ive got thinner underlay but a thick pile carpet and its so bouncy. not really confidence inspiring when trying to move quickly up/down stairs

ive got cosi 10mm on my stairs and its fine couple of staples in the corners to hold it in place job done. think I only paid £35 for a 15 sq mtr roll from the local wholesaler

I went for cosi 10mm in the end. Very impressed. Ended up ordering the carpet online for £7 Sq/M cheaper than a local carpet shop wanted. Order 30 Sq/M in total after the fitter measured 27.

All in with gripper, underlay, carpet and fitting it cost £667 and i'm well happy with the result. Finishes off the room a treat.

I believe so. Sensations twist wood pigeon was all I remember. Seems like a decent enough carpet. Unsure whether it's any good though

Yeah sensations is great stuff, I have the normal sensations on our stairs and landing and our daughter room. How much did you pay per Sqm ?
