▲ as above, could this possibly be brake shoes worn and need replacing. How straight forward is this to do yourself and save on mechanic fees.

I'd say so. Easy to do yourself, theres a guide here if you haven't done them before.

Sounds like the shoes need cleaning/roughing up or the shoes are low , drum is very easy to remove it's one large nut under the silver cap in the centre of the drum (can be tapped out with a screwdriver)
Remove the split pin, then with a buzz gun remove the large nut the drum may need a persuasive tap go get it off then once your in see if the shoes need replacing or cleaning and adjusting then do the reverse and fit a new split pin !

What are the best methods for cleaning? Also what do you mean by roughing up?
