Any of you lot with a criminal record been to america. Me and the family want to go to florida in 2016 but I'm worried about getting refused a visa.

Any help much appreciated

Depending on what it's for, I would be quite surprised if you get one tbh, they're pretty strict.

Not sure if there's a lot of help to offer. If you've got a criminal record, there's not much to do except apply and hope for the best.

I'd just apply now and see how it goes. Nothing says you can't apply now and again in 2016.

Had to apply 10 years ago, actually had to go to american embassy and sit in a room with loads of people waiting for an interview where they asked what conviction was for, purpose of trip etc

Iv been to America on holiday and have a criminal record but it was a few years ago so couldn't comment on how strict it is now I'd guess it's tightened up with all the terror threats etc, as said no harm in trying should be fine if it's minor depends how serious your record is.

The question on the visa waiver form asks you something like: "have you ever been arrested for a crime of moral turpitude?" - unfortunately you'll have to check 'yes' and they'll send you home straight away.

So you'll need to apply for a visa to get in, no idea what the outcome will be - how long until the convictions are spent?

Brother is going through this process now, he has similar convictions to you and iirc he has to go the US Embassy for an interview.

He's not to hopeful about getting one.

Yes it's worth noting that for us non-criminal types, we can simply get into the US with a visa waiver (which is the ESTA). You'll actually need a visa as you're a convict and don't qualify for the terms of the ESTA. I've read of stories with much worse criminal records getting a visa though, so I wouldn't cancel your trip just yet - just don't expect to go down the channels most other people go down.

Your visa (unlike the ESTA) is more likely to more than 2 years too - so I'd most definitely start the process now.

I had to get a visa this year as I was working there for 6 months, it required a phone interview and then another interview in the US embassy and about 500quid I think, but a holiday visa may be different.

Expect to be at the embassy from 7am till 5pm. You'll get a letter saying your appointment is at 8am, but you'll get there to find about 1000 people all with an appointment for 8am
