Sony STRDN850

Thoughts please Alex/Dom

£400, powerful, alleged good sound, 7.1, fairly decent inputs (No component video) great menu system, wifi, app for iOS, uses Airplay etc.

That is the utmost of my budget for an ACR, anyone got alternatives? Seems cheaper ones dont have 7.1 which is fine, but might not be great long term. Then none of them have wifi so it will be a pain to do firmware updates etc. So unsure what to go with!

Speakers it will be used with are one of two:

Jamo: A102HCS
Wharfedale: DX1 HCP 5.1

Thoughts please. Still haven't decided on a Telly but think I like the look of the LGLB730V after having a look at Currys, the screen size is perfect. Instore demo wasn't that great at showing off its performance but it looked good.

You'd be better off reading reviews on AVSForums or AVForums that attempting to gauge performance from stores like Curry's.

I didn't mean I judged the picture solely on that but it had some tracking shots and they looked 100% better than what I have now.

AV forums don't have any info on it.

Thanks for AV tips!

Except for a comprehensive review.

Gets some good scores, but I'd have a look in the comments where you'll find pictures of the banding issue.

Couldn't find that

So what's the option? Spend more and go plasma? The backlighting is good, which is what's bad on my LCD, far too dull. So it would be an improvement. This is this sort of ceiling of my budget so might just have to get what I pay for because I don't want a smaller screen.

I think you'll be hard pushed to get a decent plasma now - 'rocking horse shit' springs to mind if you tried to get new stock of anything like the ZT65.

If you're looking at the 55" 730V then it might be worth looking at the Panasonic AS640/AS650 (640 is a DSG 'special' but main differences are IPS vs VA panels, Active vs Passive 3D) or the Samsung H6500 (H7000 is a better option but i think you'd have to compromise with size due to price).

Edit - Obviously you're not far away from the Xmas sales, so i'd pick two screens you like and then see what comes up.

Yeah I think Xmas/Jan sales are the idea.

Thanks, I'll check these out. Like Panny stuff but not keen on the active 3D with battery glasses. I guess that whichever model I chose there will be a level of compromise so I have to look at my usage and what I want more.

Cheers all.

From the reviews it seems you can't get much better within your budget.

As Dom says, plasma is dead and gone.

Don't let that judge your decision.

Firstly, the horrible resolution of passive 3D is just as big an issue.

Secondly, you won't be using 3D anyway.

Got a Pioneer VSX-924 in the Black Friday sale from £429 down to £299.

Should be pretty decent for my needs.

Really want a Jamo a102 hcs6 kit. Price is decent but it's 5.1 and the receiver is 7.1. Now I know I can run it properly in 5.1 setup but seeming as I have the extra channels I thougjt I would look into separates, they are available separately (no pun intended) but seems since I checked the other day now nowhere sells them

Looks to be discontinued very soon so I need to purchase soon. If I fancy upgrading in the future, to 7.1 is another makes satellites going to fudge the sound?

Best I found was a single white one for sale on EBay.

Can't tell much difference between a good 5.1 setup and 7.1.

If your room is difficult, 7.1 might help compensate. Might also make it even worse, though.

Mixing speakers is not an issue. I have three different brands in my setup.

I know a lot of people who've started out with a smallish 5.1 kit, but later wanted to upgrade to larger front speakers. If you go that route, you'll have your 7.1 setup.

Ok Alex thanks. I might keep my eyes peeled for some second hand ones as they have been around a while.

Just need to decide on white or black. The White would blend in to the TV unit, but stand out on the carpet. Think black is safest!

Shop over here has them at around £60. Not sure on shipping, but might be worth looking into?

Thought about the Boston Acoustics XS? Similar price and styling to the Jamo's.

They ship to the UK also £91. Not bad at all Alex. Well done! Suppose it makes sense what with Jamo being Danish and all...

White. Looks way more discreet and isn't a dust magnet like black.

Only exception is if you have a dedicated home cinema room with black or dark walls.

White sub would blend in with my TV unit, as would the front satellites.
