Can the Nest be mounted to the wall without the 'plate'?

The plate/mounting is in two parts:
1) The mount/dock (for power).
2) The plate/bezel.
You can just mount the dock straight to the wall which would mean it looks like the Nest is fixed directly to the wall with no bezel.. You would however need to hide the power cable somewhere.

You can't.
The mount part is part of what enables it to rotate.
Not sure in which circumstances you'd have any benefit doing that, the mount plate bit sits completely inside the main round unit.

Wait a minute, just seen that big bexel thing in Davey's link, that looks terrible, definitely don't need that.
Having the white unit beside the nest also completely defeats the purpose of having a nice looking nest. Should either be beside the boiler or in my case was easier to mount beside the programmer, well out of site.

I 100% agree, it would look so much better sat on its own without the bezel or heat-link..
Sadly re-plastering last night was not a possibility

It looks like the Heat-Link could be a UK specific thing, the US versions seem to have a much more complicated dock with multi-stage cooling/blower/heater outputs:
Where as we just get a simple 240v powered NC/NO affair.

so in all its an optimiser that self learns heat gain and loss and then optimizes
Good luck if your house is badly affected by outside air as you will have negative gains etc
This assumes you have schedules setup that complement this
Seems a bit of old tech but with a fancy GUI

It self learns heat gain and loss + self learns your schedule without programming it.
The without programming it is the biggest selling point, considering nobody knows how to program their heating. Also allows remote control + looks nice + is a gateway to further home automation.

NestLabs Its now owned by google so fingers crossed it will be supported/complimented by future google home-automation hardware.. Apparently it already integrates with LIFX WIFI lights.

Right, so i'm getting confused with all the geek speak 
I have a normal style boiler, not a combi. I have a programmer in the kitchen underneath the boiler and in the living room I have a dial thermostat on the wall.
What exactly do I need to do to install this? Ideally I don't want the nest dial on the wall. Is that possible?

You put the Heat-Link in the place of your dial thermostat (Assuming its a 240v one because the heat-link needs power)
You then get the additional desk stand for the Nest (you'll need to keep it charged using the USB charger included).

Firstly, non combi doesn't mean wasting money. You need a condensing boiler, which can be combi or not. More than 1 shower and normally a combi isn't recommended, you can get more powerful combis but they are more expensive.
Secondly, from reading about Ben's setup before, I'd replace the room stat with the actual round nest unit and put the heatlink at the boiler/wherever the current programmer is.

Really, do you have stats to prove that as I can't see how you can save 500+ a year on gas which is probably over 50% annual savings of your current bill on average
